Pallet Types

Understanding different pallet constructions helps you choose the right option for your needs.

Stringer Pallets

Most common type in North America. Uses 2x4 or 3x4 lumber "stringers" running lengthwise to support the deck boards.

Pros

  • Lower cost
  • Easier to repair
  • Widely available

Cons

  • Limited to 2-way or partial 4-way entry
  • Less durable than block pallets

Block Pallets

Uses blocks of solid wood between the top and bottom decks. Provides true 4-way entry for fork trucks.

Pros

  • True 4-way entry
  • More durable
  • Better for automation

Cons

  • Higher cost
  • More complex to repair

Double-Face Pallets

Has deck boards on both top and bottom. Can be reversible or non-reversible.

Pros

  • Reversible options
  • More versatile
  • Longer lifespan

Cons

  • Heavier
  • More expensive

Single-Face Pallets

Has deck boards only on top. Lighter and less expensive than double-face.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Lower cost
  • Good for one-way shipping

Cons

  • Less stable for stacking
  • Not reusable long-term

Choosing the Right Size

Key factors to consider when selecting pallet dimensions for your application.

Load Weight

Consider both static (stationary) and dynamic (moving) load capacity. Factor in stacking height and weight distribution.

Product Dimensions

Ensure products fit efficiently on the pallet without overhang. Consider optimal configuration for your packaging.

Transportation

Standard trailer width accommodates 48" pallets side by side. Consider truck/container dimensions for shipping.

Storage System

Match pallet size to your racking system. Consider clearance requirements and automation compatibility.

Industry Standards

Many industries have preferred sizes. GMA 48x40 is standard for retail and grocery in North America.

International Shipping

For export, consider ISPM-15 requirements and regional size preferences at destination.
